Warm sunny weather, great beaches, colour, festivities, good food and wine... the Valencia region of Spain has the lot and plenty more besides.
The Costa Blanca which stretches for more than 100 kilometres is one of Spain’s most popular coastal areas and takes in the city of Alicante and the ever popular beach resort of Benidorm.
This area has many splendid international golf resorts and includes courses designed by the likes of Severiano Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal.
Alicante is the capital of the Costa Blanca region, a very cosmopolitan city with a real mix of modern and older style architecture. The city has much to be explored and discovered including Santa Bárbara Castle. Situated in a high position overlooking the sea, this is one of Spain biggest mediaeval fortresses will give you great views over the city. The Santa Cruz quarter which is the older part of Alicante is well worth exploring, for it is here that you can walk in traffic free streets and discover many of the city's monuments.
To the north of that lies the Costa de Azahar which supports marinas, many great beach areas and some splendid golfing resorts. The mountain region of Castellon is the home of many small communities and this is a great area for walking, mountaineering and horse riding. Some of the more interesting towns in this area include Benicarlo and Peniscola which is famed for its well preserved medieval centre that stands on a rock over the sea.
Valencia which has a splendid old town centre is the region's capital. It is a mix of ultra modern, Gothic and Baroque styled architecture but they seems to work well together. There are many theatres, art galleries and museums and there is always an arts or cultural fair or event taking place at any time during the year.
The quality of some of the locally produced wines is excellent. They include Fondillón and Tinto and they go well with the local dishes which include many different varieties of paella.
The local people of the region are very keen to preserve and display their culture and they will never be less than warm and welcoming to tourists.
