Andalucia is the largest and probably the most diverse of the Spanish regions. With its distinctive architecture, it varies from the sun drenched Mediterranean beach resorts in the south to green and forested valleys, to ancient volcanic and desert regions and the snow capped mountains of the Sierra Nevada.
This is the place where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea and where there are some 900 kilometres of coastline and golden sands. It supports many natural National Park areas including the Donana National Park which has been deemed a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, Grazalema, Sierra de las Nieves and Sierra Bermeja which support unique fir forests.
The Sierra Nevada mountains are high enough to be snow capper for the major part of the year and during the winter and spring are home to skiing enthusiasts. During the summer, this region provides some great walking country.
Andalucia's coastline covers the main resort regions of the Costa del Sol and the Costa de la Luz.
The Costa del Sol is the region around Malage and includes the major resorts of Marbella, Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, and San Pedro de Alcantara.
The Costa de la Luz which is situated to the west and meets the Atlantic Ocean includes the resorts of Punta Umbria, Islantilla, Isla Cristina, Mazagon, Matalascañas, Barbate, Algeciras...
The weather here is truely Mediterranean which means you can depend upon the sunshine and warmth during the summer months.
The larger cities within Andalucia include Seville, Granada, Cordoba, Malaga and Cádiz.
Seville which is the Andalusian capital and one of the largest city of Spain has a unique ambience and is where you can see the incredible cathedral, Torre del Oro.
Cadiz with its whitewashed houses, is one of the oldest cities in Spain and one where a lot of history occurred between the English (Sir Francis Drake) and the Spanish.
Malaga with the Moorish Alcazaba and its great and popular coastline.
Granada located at the base of the Sierra Nevada and home to the Alhambra Palace.
Cordoba a monument to Moorish Spain and which houses the very impressive Great Mosque.
The gastronomy of the region is varied and includes such dishes as grilled sardines, garlic potatoes, Trevelez ham, various stews, gazpacho (a tomato-based cold soup containing cucumber, pepper, garlic, oil and vinegar) and tortas de gachas (pancakes),
Andalucia also caters well for activities and sports including skiing, golf, tennis, water sports, diving, riding, hang gliding, climbing and moto sports at Jerez race track. Bull fighting can also be found at many locations throughout the region.
