Sharing the Iberian Peninsula with Portugal but taking the lion's share in terms of area is the country and the kingdom of Spain. Much of Spain is mountainous and where it meets France in the north, it is bordered by the Pyrenees. This contrasts with the popular holiday resort strewn coastal regions where it meets the Mediterranean Sea on its southern and eastern coast and the Atlantic on its northern and western coasts.
The region of Andalucia is the largest in terms of population and the second in area. The landscape, warm, sunny climate and the friendly character of its people have all contributed to make it one of Spain's most attractive regions.
The coastal region around Huelva and Cadiz border the Atlantic Ocean and it is characterised by fine sand whereas the Mediterranean coast, from the Strait of Gibraltar to Almeria, offers a softer, warmer climate with higher water temperatures. Here too you will find the magic of Flamenco and more controversially, bullfighting.
To the North West is the cosmopolitan province of Catalonia which has a culture and language of its own. It includes the city of Barcelona and the popular tourist coastal region of the Costa Brava which offers ideal facilities for all sorts of water sports.
Some places to visit include:
The Roman Walls of Lugo (Lugo, Galicia, North West Spain)
built by the Romans to defend the town of Lucus, it has survived entirely and is deemed to be the finest example of late Roman fortifications in western Europe.
The Altamira Cave (Santander, Cantabria, Northern Spain)
a prehistoric site with the famous paintings of wild animals to be found within its great chamber.
Atatpuerca Caves (Burgos, Castilla y León, Northern Spain)
rich in fossils, they are said to have been inhabited by some of the earliest human beings in Europe.
Spain is also home to a number of large and interesting cities that are well worth a visit. They include Madrid, Valencia, Seville, Cadiz, Granada, Cordoba, Salamanca, Barcelona.
Madrid, the capital of Spain since 1562, is located in the heart of Spain and because of this together with its high altitude, it has a climate characterized by warm dry summers and cool winters. This is a city of great monuments and a medieval center which dates back to the Habsburg Empire.
It is a great cultural city and also a lively metropolis with many pubs, cafes, discotheques and nightclubs that will cater for most peoples taste.
