The Lisbon region of Portugal is probably dominated by the capital city of the country which is Lisbon. The capital since the early twelfth century, it has retained a lot of its original layout and offers its visitors much to see and occupy their time. It stages many festivities throughout the summer and its many Medieval streets have shops and restaurants that will satisfy most peoples tastes.
It is a very romantic city full of stunning Moorish tilework and cobble stoned streets that lead up to the Castle of St George which lies perched on the highest of Lisbon's seven hills. The castle was built by the Moors and today, you can wander around the ramparts and take in the amazing views above the River Tagus.
A visit to this amazing city would not be complete withoput taking in a Fado show, very intense singing accompanied by a mandolin.
The coastline of the Lisbon region is washed by the vast Atlantic Ocean and has many great resorts including those of Cascais and Estoril with its magnificient casino which is one of the largest in Europe.
The town of Sesimbra has some great seafood restaurants and local activities include scuba diving, climbing, mountain bike trails and horse riding.
Due to its proximity to the coast, the gastronomy of the region is rich in fish dishes and that includes sardines, clams, mussels and oysters and these can be washed down with some of the excellent local wines .
