When visitors head for the Veneto region of Italy, it is mostly the city of Venice that they have in mind and why not. This is a unique place built like no other city in the world and offers much more than you could fill in two weeks. But the region of Veneto overall has much more to offer than just the city of Venice.
Within Veneto, the Dolomites provide some beautiful walking country as well as skiing during the winter and spring, the Adriatic coastline which lies to the east and Lake Garda to the west will appeal to water and water sport lovers, plus, there are many very interesting and historic cities to visit all over the region.
Think of Venice and you think of romantic trips in gondolas, the Bridge of Sighs, the Grand Canal, palaces, churches... There is no danger from cars, motorcycles or bicycles as the only means of getting about is by boat or by walking. There is a real magic about this city where you will find something different and fascinating around every corner. Although Venice is no longer sinking, it does suffer from flooding several times a year but especially during the autumn and winter and the main danger to it now is the rising sea level caused by global warming.
Shakespeare who never actually visited this part of Italy, used it and some of its cities such as Verona as the location of Romeo and Juliet. This is a city that has been deemed as a world heritage site which has a Roman amphitheatre where you can enjoy live opera and some great examples of original Roman architecture.
Wherever you travel within Veneto you will find great italian food and some superb Italian wines such as Valpolicella, Amarone, Soave and Bardolino and you will never be stumped for things to see and do.
