Umbria, long considered the poor relation of its infamous neighbour Tuscany, is a beautiful, fascinating region which offers a rich history, outstanding food and some splendid wines. This, together with the fact that it is not thronged with tourists makes it a very pleasant and enjoyable place to spend a holiday.

Its hill towns and cities cities date from Etruscan, Roman and Renaissance times and include such fascinating places as Perugia, Todi, Spello, Orvieto and Assisi.
Perugia, the home of Perugina chocolate is a fun place where you can buy some of Italy's best along the Corso Vannucci, a pedestrian only shopping area. The steepness of its streets are served by escalators and elevators and during the summer there is a continuous 10 day jazz festival that should not be missed.

Assisi is one of Umbria's most-visited destinations, where, with its association of St Francis, it attracts many pilgrims. Spoleto is a well-preserved hilltown surrounded by attractive countryside, and is famous as the home of the annual Music Festival dei Due Mondi and the Etruscan hilltop town of Orvieto offers some fascinating underground archeological tours.

Lake Trasimeno, found in the west of Umbria, is one of Italy's largest lakes and this is a beautiful and popular area to visit.
