With the heavy influence of Greece during its past, you would be forgiven for thinking that Sicily was part of the Greek Island paradise. It is in fact part of Italy but with a language that has noticible differences to the conventional Italian language. Located at the toe of Italy's famous boot shape, it has a very Mediterranean style climate with warm sunny summers and mild winters. It has a history of volcanic activity and in the eastern part of the island you will find Mount Etna.
As you would expect from an island community, the local cuisine is heavily influenced by seafood including anchovies, sardines and tuna and there is a stiff helping of cheeses such as ricotta, pecorino and provolino.
The capital of Sicily is Palermo which boasts a lot of fine Norman buildings and churches and to the south you will find the ancient city of Siracusa which has a big Greek influence and where the old city centre is positioned on the island of Ortygia which is just offshore. Things to see here include the Roman amphitheatre, the Temple of Zeus and the Temple of Apollo.
Sicily has many great resort towns such as Cefalu, Taormina, Ragusa, Comiso and Modica, plus Agrigento which is famous for the Valley of the Temples with buildings that date back to fifth century BC.
Sicily was originally a kingdom, was independent from Italy until the 19th century and although it is now a fully fledged region of Italy, it has its own unique culture and traditions.
Sicilians have very close and strong family connections and this island will prove to be ideal for a family holiday.
