Puglia, the region that covers the heel of Italy's famous boot shape, has two coastlines, one that borders the Adriatic Sea and one that borders the Ionian Sea.
A holiday in Puglia means weather that is truely Mediterranean with dependable, warm dry summers and mild winters but the fact that you are never more than about 30 km from the coast means that it will never be too hot.
Puglia has a coastline of beaches, rocky coves and many steep and spectacular cliffs and the baroque towns, white-washed trullo houses, huge olive groves and orchards give it a character of its own.
The region is mostly one of agriculture and fishing and it is the major producer of Italy's fish. The local cuisine reflects this with typical dishes including prawns, sardines, oysters roasted with oil, lemon, garlic and marjoram, mussel and potato soup and sea bream.
The trulli. many of which are available as holiday homes, are amazing little cone-roofed whitewashed houses mostly found in the north of the region that are protected as a UNESCO world heritage site. Also available are holiday homes that will offer you B&B plus extras such as spas and cookery courses.
There are many unique and fascinating cities and towns to visit including the baroque city of Lecce, the Adriatic seaports and resorts of Peschici, Manfredonia and Vieste. The Moorish town of Martina Franca is a fascinating place to visit as is Bari, an old unchanged city with a lot of history and in Ostuni you will find a hilltop town rivaling some of those found in Umbria with Frederick II's 13th century castles creating a remarkable fairytale like atmosphere.
It's not only holidays in Puglia that attract people to this region of Italy, many are looking for an alternative lifestyle and are seeking to buy and relocate permanently to Puglia.
