The Rhône-Alpes region of France is located in the south east of the country and borders both Switzerland and Italy and if you like a holiday with wild and spectacular mountain scenery then it will suit you down to the ground. It is an area that includes the French Alps, Mont Blanc, the Ardeche with its many deep gorges and fast flowing rivers and it takes in the city of Lyon which is the second largest city in France.

Having the Alps on your doorstep of course means that there are many ski resorts around and the Rhone Alpes has many of the best.
Chamonix which can be found nestling at the foot of Mount Blanc is a well known and popular ski resort with many great restaurants, bars and shops but it does not stop at skiing. It is also a great mountaineering centre and a popular region for mountain biking, paragliding and hiking.
It also includes the popular ski towns of Grenoble which has in the past hosted the winter olympics and Courcheval and has a ski season that runs from winter until mid spring.

Lyon is the capital of the region and has a great range of things to see and do. The older part of the city on the banks of the Saone River, at the foot of the Fourviere Hill is a maze of narrow cobbled streets where you will see many Renaissance restored buildings, which reflect the prosperity the city underwent during the 16th and 17th centuries. Between the River Rhone and Saone sits the Place Bellecour and not far away is the magnificient Saint-Jean Cathedral ...
Lyon is also a modern city with many excellent shopping arcades, a lively nightlife and with it being a major centre of gastronomy you will also have no trouble in finding a decent restaurant.

The Ardeche is a region of fast flowing rivers and deep gorges and here you will find some great white water rafting country. This area is also a leading producer of chestnuts which go into the making of soups and ragouts but are probably more popular being turned out as "marron glacé".

The Rhone Alpes is not just a region for skiing holidays. There is much to see and do during a summer holiday too, including picturesque villages, spa towns, miles of rolling vineyards, caves and it it a superb region for walkers and hikers.
