The Nord-Pas-de-Calais region can be found in the North of France and rests between Belgium and the English Channel. It is a region of forests, wood and marshlands, rolling meadows and a long stretch of coast plus waterways for cruising.
Fetes and festivals are part of daily life in this region which is steeped in history and Dunkerque attracts tens of thousands of people each year for one of the biggest and most famous carnivals of the region. It has many monuments, museums and historic cities dating from Roman times to the last World War and includes Vimy Ridge, the site of some of the most desperate First World War trench warfare.
Pas de Calais is an area of peace and quiet that attracts many walkers, cyclists, horseback riders and fishermen.
Other places to visit include Le Touquet, a step back in time, the pretty little fishing village of Etaples and the wild, windswept Wimereux. The beaches of Dunkerque and Boulogne-sur-Mer which has a very attractive medieval quarter and a large number of fish restaurants also deserve a visit.
Originally thought of as a landing place and just somewhere to pass through on your way to other places in France, many are now discovering the delights of its wonderful landscapes and gastronomy.
