Lower Normandy (Basse Normandie) as its name suggests, forms the more sourtherly part of the Normandy region of France. Caen which is its capital is a large ferry port and is one of the main ports of arrival and departure for cross channel ferries. This is an area of beautiful countryside, superb beaches and also the scene of the famous Normandy landings during world war II.
The town of Bayeux is where the infamous Bayeux Tapestry is housed. Well known as being one of Frances' National Treasures, this is something not to be missed when you holiday in this region. It was created around the time of William the Conqueror to commemorate his victory over King Harold at the Battle of Hastings.
The town of Bayeux has an amazingly well preserved medieval sector, a cathedral that dates to around the time of William the Conqueror and probably the largest British War Cemetry in the region.
At the most westerly tip of Lower Normandy lies Mont-Saint-Michel right on the border with Brittany. A small, rocky island which was originally known as Mont-Tombe and dating from the 8th century, it has been used as a monastery and a state prison since that time. It has seen a lot of wars and a lot of history come and go and today it reigns supreme as a popular tourist destination. Connected to land by a 1000 metre long causeway built in 1875 and encircled by a massive wall, it now houses many shops and restaurants.
The coastline is dotted with many small fishing towns of which Honfleur is one. Located on the southern bank of the Estuary of the Seine, it is linked to Le Havre by the Normandy suspension bridge. Its beauty and charm attracted many famous artists such as Renoir, Pissarro and Cezanne and that charm lives on as today it proves to be very popular with tourists.
Lower Normandy is probably not the place to holiday if you are heavily dependent upon hot sunny weather but catch it on a good day and you'll find it second to none both for its splendid countryside and places of interest.
