Limousin is a very rural region of France. It has lush pastures that are ideal for cattle, forests, acres of cereal crops plus lakes and rivers that teem with fish. It has a history that has seen it as a centre for pottery, enamel and fine porcelain and even today it still bears some of that reputation.
If you are into fishing, canoeing or kayaking or if you enjoy walks through deep gorges and past cascading waterfalls then Limousin is the ideal place for a holiday.
The area around the river Creuse at Lac de Chambon, close to Eguzon, houses a popular activity centre that specialises in water sports and Gimel-les-Cascades is a group of three waterfalls that disappear into a deep gorge.
The Plateau de Millevaches is a natural park region with a vast range of hills and rivers that is ideal for grazing cattle but it is also a splendid and popular area for walkers, hikers and cyclists.
Some of the more interesting towns within Limousin include:
- Bourges which has many old buildings set in its cobbled streets has the 12th century Cathedral St-Etienne which is deemed to be one of the finest in France.
- Limoges, the largest city in the region is a centre of fine china and contains many museums to that effect plus, there are many art and craft shops that have many pieces on display.
- Collonges la Rouge is said to be one of the most beautiful villages of France. Its narrow streets are lined with beautiful manoirs built entirely of bright redstone.
- Then we come to the tragic village of Oradour-sur-Glane which lies in the south west of Limousin. Towards the end of world war II in June 1944, the villagers were rounded up and executed and the village was destroyed by the Germans as retribution for an act of resistance against them. This however proved to be unfounded as it was actually committed by those that lived in a village with a similar sounding name. Everything has been left as it was when this occurred and today, you can walk through the village to remind you of the tragedies and travesties of war. A chilling and numbing experience.
When you holiday in Limousin, at any time of the year you will find festivals, village fetes, fairs and concerts that give vistors the opportunity to meet the local people, share their customs and sample their lifestyle.
