Auvergne, situated in south, central France, is a region of great natural beauty. This is where the Massif Central, an ancient and well worn mountain range, is cut by deep river gorges and where you can find many areas of woodland and forest. The Puy de Dôme, an extinct volcano, rises to a height of almost five thousand feet and provides the climber with some breathtaking views near the summit. This is a region of many extinct volcanoes and the Regional Park of Auvergne is renowned for its wild flowers and animals.

Be it winter or summer, those looking for a more active holiday will never be short of something to do. There are ski resorts aplenty that cater for both downhill and cross country skiing and during the summer there is fishing, swimming, cycling, golf, white water rafting, hang gliding ..... and this is also great horse riding, walking and hiking country.

The regional capital Clermont-Ferrand is located within the Massif Central surrounded by the Chaîne des Puys (extinct volcanoes). It is one of the oldest cities in France and is famous for its statue of the the Arverni chieftain Vercingétorix which rests in the main square. This is the city that houses the headquarters of the French tyre manufacturer Michelin and up until the early 1970's it hosted the French Grand Prix.

The town of Vichy lies on the banks of the Allier River and the now extinct volcanic activity has resulted in the many thermal springs that exist near here. Since the Roman times, the waters of the springs are said to have cured many an ailment and the existence of the L'Oreal factory does nothing to dispel those claims.

The Auvergne region is famous for some of France's well known cheeses and these include Cantal, Salers, St Nectaire, Tôme d'Auvergne and Bleu d'Auvergne. Many of the region's excellent restaurants include these on their menus together with Coufidou, Truffade and aligot, tripes and tripoux.

With its abundance of wild life, its natural parks and extinct volcanic chain, a holiday in the Auvergne region of France will not leave you short of spectacular places to see or interesting towns and cities to visit.

Looking for peace, tranquillity and glorious mountain walks? - then the Auvergne will be a place you will love. Geologically it is a volcanic region and for this reason its beauty is preserved by the French as a National Park. From the house there are stunning views of the mountains. Raymond is a tiny hamlet set well off the main road. Caravans and lorries are forbidden to cross over the pass above at Puy Mary, so that even in the height of summer when some people do find this secluded valley and make for the mountains, it remains quiet and peaceful.
The medieval centre of the market town of Aurillac, 30 kilometres away, is a delightful area with good shopping for food and fashion. Closer to home is Mandailles, with a boulangerie/epicerie and two restaurants. Behind the cottage is a farm where you can get goats cheese and yoghurt and a travelling shop arrives twice a week.
Activities: walking, cycling, swimming, fishing, skiing, riding, climbing
