Corsica (Corse), an island off the south east coast of France, is a land of people who take great pride in their culture, traditions, crafts, music and history. It is a place that has an abundance of monuments that have been crafted throughout its history and these include the torri (towers) that were constructed during the Bronze Age and many still stand today overlooking the Corsican coastline. Corsica's most famous son is probably Napoléon Bonaparte. Napoléon was born in the town of Ajaccio on the west coast of Corsica and the ancestral home, Casa Buonaparte, can still be found there.

Corsica is a land of mountains, forests and one thousand kilometres of coastline. It is a place of lakes and rivers that flow through deep gorges producing spectacular waterfalls. There are more than 200 beaches on Corsica and much of the island is protected as a natural park. It has a pleasant Mediterranean climate and is a popular but not overcrowded destination for many holiday tourists from Europe.

Ajaccio, a modern city, is the capital of the island. It lies on the west coast adjacent to the Gulf of Ajaccio and of course you will find the influence of Napoléon just about everywhere. This includes statues, street names and the house where he was born in 1769.

The areas around Calvi in the northwest and Porto Vecchio and Bonifacio in the south are where you will find the main resorts on Corsica but there are many other pleasant areas that less crowded.
Bonifacio is a real little gem of a city. Located on the southern tip of the island, with a spectacular limestone coastline where the cliffs have been undercut by the ocean. This gives some of the buildings the appearance of hanging over the water and closeby, there are some excellent beaches.

As with most places in France, gastronomy plays a major role in the life of a Corsican. It has a grand array of local dishes that include prisuttu, ham from pigs that have been fattened on chestnuts and acorns, wild boar stew, sheep and goats cheese. Being within close proximity of the sea, of course means that you will also find many fish dishes and these, washed down with some of the excellent local wines will make your holiday in Corsica a very pleasant one.

Corsica caters well for those looking for an active holiday. There are some fine golf courses at Bastia, Reginu, Lezza and Sperone and with such a great array of beaches, watersports are very much to the fore.
