The region of Upper Normandy (Haute Normandie) in France is located to the north west of Paris. It is an area that is famous for the World War II D Day Beach landings and it is a pilgrimage for many thousands of people each year to commemorate the sacrifices of soldiers who gave their lives so that we can enjoy the freedoms we have today. There are many museums that explain the events that took place here during the war and indeed, you will still find evidence such as abandoned pillboxes in and around the countryside.

The river Seine ambles through the region on its way to the sea via Le Havre with the "Route des Abbayes" being a particularly attractive sector.
There are also many interesting towns within the region:
- Rouen is the capital of Haute-Normandie and an important French harbour. It is of the most beautiful cities in France and is where Joan of Arc was burned alive.
- Le Havre was heavily bombed during the war and was almost completely destroyed. Today it is an important port which has been almost completely rebuilt.
- Dieppe is one of the major cross channel ferry ports and it is also a popular seaside town for holiday makers.

- Vernon which is where the river Seine enters the region is situated on the left bank between the Forêt de Vernon and the Forêt de Bizy. It houses the church of Notre-Dame which dates from the 12th century.
- Varengeville sur Mer, a beautiful little seaside resort, lies to the west of Dieppe. Its main attractions are the Parc des Moustiers and the Manoir d'Ango.
- Cany-Barville is a typical Normandy style town with its many old watermills and an open air market every Monday.

Upper Normandy provides plenty to see and do for the holiday maker:
- Monet’s Home at Giverny
- Museum des Beaux-Arts at Rouen
- Joan of Arc Museum at Rouen
- Cathedral at Rouen
- Château Gaillard at Les Andelys

A holiday in Upper Normandy (Haute Normandie) offers much more than war memories, with its beautiful rolling countryside and great seaside resorts you are sure to find things to see and do that will leave you with a lot of pleasant, happy memories.

The house is named after the old cooking pot which was originally to be found in the fireplace of St Lucien's 16th Century manoir and which is now hanging in the kitchen of our gîte.
In the peaceful hamlet of Le Grand Mont Alix just two kilometres from our own home. It has recently been fully renovated to high standards, while maintaining the character of a traditional Normandy longère.
You should be able to find whatever you are looking for in a French holiday. Set in beautiful countryside which is a pleasure for both walkers and cyclists or for those who prefer just to laze the days away.
On days when you want a break from doing the "tourist things", you may like to put your feet up and relax in the garden, perhaps with a lunch which you have grilled on the barbecue.

If you want to be looked after, this is the option for you.
Breakfast, served in our own living room (which in cooler weather is heated by a wood burning fire), will be waiting for you every morning - fresh coffee and croissants with home-made jams produced from fruit out of our own garden.
Les Quatre Oiseaux is a wooden framed longère. Open beamed bedrooms are on the first floor in the old grenier.
You are welcome to relax in our gardens, play a game of lawn chess, or practise boules on our terrain de pétanque.
