Basilicata is a mostly mountainous region of Italy and is in stark contrast to its neighbours Puglia and Calabria. Having said that, it has nevertheless, something special and unique to offer anyone who wishes to holiday there.
It has a large but now extinct volcano, Monte Vulture which lies to the north with many rivers flowing south into the Gulf of Taranto.
On its southern coast lies the seaside town of Maratea - a beautiful resort and still unspoilt by the tourist hordes

- the ancient village of Craco which has been uninhabited since about 1963 after suffering earthquake damage, was built on top of a 400 metre high cliff, for defensive reasons.
- The Sassi di Matera - ancient troglodyte dwellings carved into the tufo rock thousands of years ago and which has been deemed a world heritage site by UNESCO.
- Melfi - a town that was important during the middle ages due to its position, has a Norman castle that is well worth a visit.
