Friuli-Venezia Giulia situated in northeast of Italy and bordering both Slovenia and Austria is a land of mountains which sweep down to the flatter coastal region that meets the Adriatic. This part of Italy has its own language called Friulian that is spoken by about 50% of the population and also presents a mix of many different cultures.
Trieste is the capital of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and is located on the Slovenian border and it was here that James Joyce could be seen strolling through the streets of the city during his period of voluntary exile during the early 20th century and it was here that he wrote some of the more significant chapters of Ulysses.
There are many ancient and interesting site to see including the medieval villages of Portogruaro, Summaga, Sesto Al Reghena, and Aquileia - a Roman colony founded in 181 B.C. whose artifacts are displayed in the Museo Archeologico. Aquileia was a strategic point for trade with the Danube countries and is now deemed to be a UNESCO Heritage site.
The Friuli School of mosaics at Spilimbergo is the only professional school of mosaic art in the world and where students of many different nationalities learn to master this craft that has made Friuli Venezia Giulia famous for it worldwide and there are many examples of the mosaics on display.
One of the best stretches of the upper Adriatic coast is the area that lies between Grado and Lignano Sabbiadoro with long beautiful expanses of golden sand that slope gently down to the deep blue sea.
