Planicies are the plains of Portugal situated to the east and south of Lisbon. It is an area of agriculture, fields of horses, sheep, olive trees and vines.
It has a spectacular Atlantic coastline with cliffs, rocky coves and long sandy deserted beaches - truely an area of outstanding natural splendour.

During the summer, the Santarem National Agricultural Fair is where you will see a lot of dancing and even bullfighting along with the usual farming activities that are on display and when this is not happening why not visit the Portas do Sol - an area of splendid gardens with panoramic views of the River Tagus.

Golega hosts a Horse Fair during the month of November where locals dress in their colourful 18th century costumes and show their many horsemanship skills..

There are many other towns well worth a visit including Elvas which is surrounded by city walls and with a spectacular viaduct.
Evora, a UNESCO heritage centre, with many churches, palaces and a remarkable Roman temple

Planicies is a region where folklore is still very much alive and which is expressed during the many local festivals that you will find there.

This farmhouse has been recently completely restored retaining as many of the old features, like chestnut beams and wooden floors, as was possible. It has 4 bedrooms, living room, dining room, kitchen and 2 bathrooms. Digital Satellite TV (BBC 1,2,3,4 and BBC radio chanels and CNN to name but a few) is available. Outside there is a garden, an unfiltered 4 by 5 metre swimming pool, great for splashing around in, a terrace with panoramic views of the valley which it dominates views of Marvão and, on a clear day, the snow-capped mountains of Serra de Estrela, the highest mountain range in Portugal. Its property marks the border with Spain.
Crença is rented weekly on a self-catering basis.

Pomar Velho ( The Old Orchard ) is a farmhouse built 200 years ago, converted and completely restored to offer high quality guest house accommodation and a wholesome mixture of Mediterranean and British cooking.
Surrounded by stunning countryside and sitting in 5 acres of private grounds, it has its own natural spring which flows into a burbling brook below.
The house comprises 7 double bedrooms all en suite, 4 of which are offered on a Bed and Breakfast and optional evening meal basis. Outside there are large terraces back and front and a 10 metre swimming pool with accompanying patio. Guests may also wish to stroll around the 5 acre grounds or walk 500 metres to the Portuguese village of Galegos or the Spanish village of Fonteneira.
