Catalonia lies in the North East of Spain and covers the famous and beautiful coastline of the Costa Brava and one of Europe's best loved cities, Barcelona.
Within the region's 600 kilometres of Mediterranean coast, the Costa Brave stretches from the France / Spain border to the Tordera river further south and has been a popular destination for holidaymakers for many years. It supports as many summer water sports as you can think of and further inland, within the more mountainous areas you will discover great walking and mountaineering country. The Pyrenees Mountains have proved to be dependable for producing great skiing facilities throughout the winter and spring.
Barcelona is by far the largest city in Catalonia and as such, it reigns as its capital. It has a great Mediterranean feel with much to see and do and is also one of Spain's most important ports. It offers the tourist superb shopping facilities, great night life and the older, medieval part of the city is well known for its gothic architecture. Many Catalan festivities take place in and around Barcelona during most of the year.
The cuisine of Catalonia is based on the availability of the local produce and includes bread, pasta, fresh vegetables like artichokes, peppers, tomatoes and aubergines, olives, hams, cheese, poultry and of course locally caught fish. These go to make some of the dishes on offer such as Suquet de peix (a fish casserole), Ollada (a meat + vegetable stew), Catalan cod (cod cooked with raisins and pine nuts)...
