Asturias lies to the north of Spain and is probably less fashionable as a tourist area than its southern cousins. Nonetheless, it has many qualities that make it a superb destination for a Spanish holiday.
The Costa Verde is its coastline and is aptly named as the region is home to many green and forested lakes and valleys that cut deep into its range of high peaked, snow capped mountains. The Picos de Europa is a craggy limestone mountain range that lies just over 30 kilometres from the coast and provides some great mountaineering and walking country.
Asturias is also home to some of Spain's best natural park areas and this is where you could spot wolves or bears. Fishermen are well catered for in this region with a host of great fishing spots both freshwater and sea water and indeed, fishing is one of the main occupations of Asturias with fishing villages dotted all along the coastline.
Oviedo is the capital city of Asturias and is well known for its cathedral and university. Here you will find many good restaurants that will serve up samples of the local gastronomy that includes fish dishes, cheeses and La Fabada which is a bean stew dish. This is also a region where you will find vast orchards and from these they produce a very drinkable local cider.
You will find a great variety of sports and pastimes to your liking including diving, sailing and windsurfing and golfers are well catered for with many picturesque courses available.
Historic and prehistoric sites are to be found all over Asturias but probably the most famous is the Altamira caves.
This is a region that will provide you with some decent comfortable holiday weather. It does not suffer from the searing heat that befalls some of the interior and more southern regions of Spain.
