A chaudron is a large cauldron, an old cooking pot which was originally to be found in the fireplace of St Lucien's 16th Century manoir and which is now hanging in the kitchen of our gîte.
The house is in the peaceful hamlet of Le Grand Mont Alix just two kilometres from our own home.
Recently fully renovated to high standards, while maintaining the character of a traditional Normandy longère.
- All accommodation is on the ground floor and part of the charm consists of the low beams to be found throughout the house, especially in the kitchen.
- The dining-kitchen is fitted with gas hob and electric oven, large fridge and microwave and the washing machine has its own separate area.
- The double bedroom has en suite facilities and there is a separate bathroom for guests in the twin bedded room.
- Every room is fitted with independent electric radiators, so that you are free to choose the level of heating that suits you in each part of the house.
- The comfortable sitting room has an open fire with television, video and radio/CD players.
- It leads directly onto a good-sized terrace with views over the surrounding countryside.
- Spacious gardens both at the front and back of the house.
On days when you want a break from doing the "tourist things", you may like to put your feet up and relax in the garden, perhaps with a lunch which you have grilled on the barbecue.
Locality (close to: Forges-les-Eaux)
St Lucien is set in beautiful countryside which is a pleasure for both walkers and cyclists or for those who prefer just to laze the days away. The spa town of Forges-les-Eaux with its famous casino is close by, as are the picturesque forest villages of Lyons-La-Forêt (home of Maurice Ravel) and Ry, famed as the setting for Flaubert's "Madame Bovary."
The historic city of Rouen with its variety of old streets, buildings and churches - the beautiful Vieux Marché, be prepared for the local banter, "This is where you English burnt Joan of Arc!" In addition, it is not for nothing that Rouen is known as the city of museums.
Only a short drive away is the Château of Vascoeuil (exhibitions of contemporary art) with its beautiful old colombier (pigeon loft) and the lovely Château of Martainville (Normandy traditions and furniture).
The Valley of the Seine boasts numerous pleasures. The view from the ruined Richard the Lionheart castle, Château Gaillard, is stunning and the locks which raise boats from the lower to the upper Seine are a pleasure for children of all ages!
Walk from one side of the Seine to the other across the hydro-electric dam and, if you go on a Sunday or Thursday afternoon you can soak up the atmosphere of a traditional guingette.
Garden lovers can find pleasures in abundance - there are over 60 gardens open to the public in Haute Normandie. The most popular is always Monet's Garden at Giverny which is less than an hour's drive away.
The coast boasts many resorts: the ferry port of Dieppe, Etretat with its stunning cliff formations, Fécamp and its beautiful Benedictine palace and distillery and a bit further away the lovely port of Honfleur.
Paris makes a wonderful day out and we can advise you on the best ways to get there.
Markets can be found daily in our surrounding towns and villages. And of course food and drink - local produce includes cider, calvados and cheese. Whether you want to eat in or at a local restaurant, Normandy cuisine with its ample use of cider, apples, butter and cream is world famous.
