Challacombe is very well placed to explore Exmoor and the north Devon coast. Within a fifteen mile radius there is something to please everyone: wide sandy beaches; dramatic cliff-top walks; secret rocky coves; charming wooded valleys; scenic drives; historic towns and villages; family attractions; sporting activities and, above all, the timeless heart of Exmoor.
- EXMOOR WALKS: There are many paths across the Moor - the Harepath is one of the oldest routes in England. One of our favourite walks is along the River Barle from Tarr Steps to Withypool.
- SANDY BEACHES: Miles of golden sands and good surfing along the west coast at both Woolacombe and Croyde. We like the quieter sandy beach at Crow Point near Braunton Burrows. Dedicated surfers can check conditions online.
- CYCLING: There are several recognised cycle routes across the Moor and along the coast. The whole family can enjoy the Tarka Trail from Braunton to Torrington, which follows an old railway line. Challacombe is near the National Cycle Network, see the South-West map at Sustrans.
- RUGGED CLIFFS: There are many spectacular cliff top walks on the north coast, for example at Baggy Point near Mortehoe; Lee Bay near Ilfracombe and The Valley of Rocks near Lynton.
- SECRET COVES: There are also many hidden coves, for example Heddon's Mouth near Parracombe; Blythe's Cove near Hele and Barricane Beach near Woolacombe.
- HISTORIC TOWNS: Visit the ancient harbour at Ilfracombe or the water-powered cliff railway between the coastal towns of Lynton and Lynmouth. There is High Street shopping in Barnstaple and Bideford, and medieval atmosphere in Dunster and Dulverton.
- SCENIC DRIVES: Nearly every country lane is a scenic drive. The toll road to Lee Abbey and the views from Countisbury Hill are especially dramatic.
- FAMILY ATTRACTIONS: Nearby family attractions include Exmoor Zoo, Combe Martin Wildlife Park and Watermouth Castle. There are play gyms in Barnstaple and Combe Martin.
- SPORTS: There are many local opportunities for sporting activities including coarse and sea fishing, shooting, swimming, horse riding and golf.
- LOCAL EVENTS: All year round there are local events in and around Exmoor. Have a look at this events list. For information on specific events try these links Surfing (Oceanfest), Walking & Cycling, Arts, Music.
