Stanegate Cottage is conveniently situated for visiting Hadrian's Wall country, rural Northumberland and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Hadrian's Wall country
The accommodation makes an ideal base for visiting the central, and best preserved section of the Roman Wall. The Roman fort of Birdoswald and the world famous Housesteads fort are near by, and Vindolanda is only eight miles away, where they are still uncovering treasures Should you wish to find out more about Roman life on the Wall, the Roman Army Museum is a short drive away. Northumberland
Enjoy rural Northumberland - England's 'best kept secret'. The Northumberland National Park starts just a few miles to the north of us, and continues right up to the Cheviot range of hills and the Scottish Border.
Kielder, Europe's largest man-made forest, with its lake and a variety of outdoor pursuits and leisure attractions, is a pleasant drive up the North Tyne valley.
The area, with its sparse population, its unspoilt coastline, unpolluted rivers and miles of rolling countryside is perfect for enjoying a range of outdoor activities:
Activities
- Walking; The Pennine Way passes close to the house, and the newly-created Hadrian's Wall Path passes just a couple of miles away
- Fishing; the Tyne is now reputed to be England's best salmon fishing river, and is only a few minutes away
- Horse Riding; with its many bridleways and green lanes this is an excellent area to see the area on horseback.
- Golf; Haltwhistle Golf Club is literally feet away from us; there are also fine courses at Hexham and Brampton.
If history is of interest then Northumberland also offers some fine castles to visit:
- Alnwick, with its developing gardens
- Chillingham, with its rare breed of white cattle
- Bamburgh, in its imposing position by the sea
- The National Trust properties at Wallington and Cragside are also well worth a visit.
- And, of course, Lindisfarne has a special place in Northumberland's Christian heritage.
North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural BeautyAmid its wild and rugged scenery the fascinating Lead Mining museum at Killhope, is less than an hour's drive away. Here visitors can appreciate what life must have been like as a miner over a hundred years ago, explore a reopened shaft and marvel at the spectacular, restored water wheel. Nearby lies England's highest market town at Alston and its narrow gauge railway.
LocallyGreenhead village has a convenient pub for a good meal and a well-earned drink after a hard day's walking.
Why not visit the small Cumbrian market town of Brampton, with its Antique Centre. Lanercost Priory is nearby, and Talkin Tarn makes an ideal spot for fishing, boating or a picnic.
Our 'local castle'. Thirlwall castle, is a 14th century stronghold built of Roman Wall stone. Allowed to decay in the mid-1700s, work started in 1999 to rescue it from ruin.
