Locality   (close to: Blackawton)

Lower Collaton is between Blackawton and Halwell in the heart of the South Hams. The historic town of Dartmouth, coastal walks and beaches are all six miles away. Six miles to the north is the old town of Totnes on the River Dart, with Dartmoor just beyond.

Evenings Out
For evening eating there is a fine selection of local pubs and restaurants to suit everyone’s taste and pocket, all with a well deserved reputation for good food, wine and beer, and James and Rosie will be happy to advise you.

Things to Do
Set in the heart of the South Hams, Lower Collaton is ideally placed for all local attractions, with Woodlands Adventure Park and Dartmouth Golf and Country Club both within a mile.

Sailing and Boating
Boat and dinghy hire, and even kayaks and canoes, are available for hire on the Dart, and beautiful trips can be enjoyed up the river to the villages of Dittisham and Tuckenhay (both with pubs conveniently located!) and beyond to Totnes.

Walking
There is public access to the coastal path with stunning views of the coastline from places such as Start Bay lighthouse, Prawle Point, Bolberry Down and Bolt Head. The coast is only six to seven miles away. Inland, Dartmoor offers a rugged alternative, with both gentle strolls and arduous hikes. The choice is yours!

Beaches
Blackpool Sands, between Strete and Dartmouth, has won many awards for the cleanest beach with the best facilities in Devon and the U.K. Salcombe has large stretches of sandy beaches on both sides of the estuary Compass Cove and Sugary Cove in Dartmouth can be combined with a pleasant walk round the headland. Thurlestone, Bigbury, Bantham, Hope Cove, Lannacombe (by Start Bay lighthouse) and Soar Mill Cove are all within easy reach.

Places to See
Brochures are kept in a folder and regularly added to by our guests. A few ideas could include:
Woodlands Leisure Park (1 mile away)
River Dart Country Park
Crealy Adventure Zone
Pennywell Farm Adventure
Sorley Tunnel Adventure Park (near Kingsbridge)
Steam Railways
Sharpham (where delicious wine and cheeses are made)
Collaton Fishacre (National Trust, old home of the D’Oyle Carte family)
Greenaway (National Trust, old home of Agatha Christie)
The Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan are both just over an hour’s drive away

Eating and Drinking
There are plenty of excellent restaurants in Dartmouth and Totnes. Virtually all pubs in the area do good value food, and most are children friendly. Our nearest hostelry, half a mile away, is The Forces Tavern, a good pub with a small restaurant. The Maltsters at Tuckenhay is a pretty quayside pub, which was owned by Keith Floyd until he drank it dry! It serves excellent food and beer, and has a waterfront BBQ in summer in fine weather.

Golf
The nearest course is Dartmouth Golf & Country Club, one mile away. It has two courses- a pretty, shortish 9 holer and an excellent championship course. The clubhouse also has a pleasant restaurant and bar, driving range, indoor swimming pool, sauna and jaccuzi.
