Locality (close to: Gaillac)
Things to do and see:
- In the summer, music festivals are held in the prestigious surroundings of the 12th century cathedral of ALBI, birth town of the artist Toulouse Lautrec.
- GAILLAC, LISLE SUR TARN and RABASTENS through their typically fortified architecture will give you a taste of the middle ages with their handsome brick façades, half-timbered houses, and arcaded town squares.
- Enjoy a stroll through the interesting & colourful street-markets to stock up on the fresh local produce. Tuesday & Friday are GAILLAC’s market days while Saturday is market day for RABASTENS, and Sunday for LISLE/TARN.
- Some of the best vineyards are to be found in the GAILLAC region, one of the oldest wine producing areas in France, originally planted by the Romans. We recommend some great winetasting tours, sampling GAILLAC's high quality wines.
- Beyond the GAILLAC vineyards, and their gently undulating hills, hikers will take pleasure in walking through the large forests of the Grésigne and Sivens.
- The medieval village of CORDES is a gem of Gothic architecture on its « sugar loaf » 110m high, while the fairy-tale medieval walled city of CARCASSONNE, one hour away, is breathtaking.
- "Arguably the best course we have ever played !!" ... There are four excellent championship golf courses all about 20/30 mins away, (Golf Albi Lasbordes, Golf de Florentin-Gaillac, Golf des Etangs de Fiac, Golf de Palmola Buzet/Tarn).
- Further south lies CASTRES, the Venice of the Tarn, with its canal, gardens and museum dedicated to the works of Goya.
- When you tire of the rural delights of the TARN, why not visit pink-bricked TOULOUSE (“La Ville Rose”), with its beautiful squares, chic shops and many art galleries.
- Though vibrant and cosmopolitan, TOULOUSE has a laid-back village-like atmosphere, and a relaxed pace of life. You will enjoy watching the world go by at the numerous pavement cafés in the Place Capitole, the city's heart since the 12th Century.
- The Canal du Midi, a World Heritage Site, running from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, passes through TOULOUSE and is a great place to spend a day.
- For the more technically minded you can visit the Space City “Cité de L'Espace” with MIR station, Ariane space rocket prototype and interactive games, making it also an interesting and unusual day trip for the children.
- The famous MILLAU VIADUCT built to carry the A75 motorway, a stunning 2500 metres long & 340 metres high (topping the Eiffel Tower by 23 metres) over the charming town of Millau is the highest & largest cable stayed vehicular bridge in the world and is only under an hour and a half drive away.
- For longer day trips the PYRÉNÉES are 2 hours away, the nearest MEDITERRANEAN beach (Narbonne Plage) is just under 2 hours and the ATLANTIC Ocean at Biarritz is 3 hours.
