Katie's Cottage is a large traditional Clare Farmhouse built in 1850 and three generations of the Shannon family have made it their home.
Ten members of a family of fourteen emigrated to Chicago from this house in the early 20th century.
The house was refurbished in the 1950's when the present generation of the family were born there. Kathleen (Caitlín) or Katie was the Mammy.
In the 1990's Katie's cottage was again refurbished and has hosted tourists from Europe, Australia and the U.S.A.
Features
- All the bedrooms are warm and friendly. Besides the double bedroom on the upper floor there's a double bedroom and a single bedroom on the ground floor. The bedroom on the upper floor features a comfortable bed and modern bright lighting.
- The bathroom on the ground floor has been completely renovated and has a power shower and a hand-basin.
- The kitchen is well equiped and for your convenience you'll find a microwave oven, washing machine & dryer.
- The lounge is lovingly decorated using traditional and pine furniture.
The floor is still the original polished flagstone, the high ceiling is all pine.
Make yourself comfortable on the armchairs in front of the open fire place! Many neighbours gathered around the fire with Katie in the winter nights.
Katie is long gone but the traditional warm turf fire continues and the old water kettle for the tea is still there ..
Though you might feel put back in time a colour TV (satellite) and a video recorder with a choice of video tapes (also for children) will keep you in touch with the modern world...
- There's a lovely, well kept garden in front of it with lots of flowers.
Enjoy the warmer days and evenings on the picnic bench and have a chat with the friendly neighbours!
