A 300 year old farm homestead situated on the McDonald farm at Lusmagh, Banagher, Co. Offaly only 1 Km from the River Shannon.
This property is Bord Failte (Irish Tourist Board) approved.
It was the original home of the McDonald family for generations and has been lovingly restored, keeping as much as possible of the 'Old World' character of the cottage while adding all the modern comforts.
Facilities:
- The bedrooms are two double rooms and two single rooms.
One of the double bedrooms can convert to a twin room.
All bed linen and towels are provided and are included in the rental price.
- There are two showers and two w.c.s, one of which adjoins two of the bedrooms
- The kitchen is well equipped with an electric cooker fitted with a ceramic hob, washing machine, fridge, microwave, iron, toaster, and coffee maker and dishwasher. Tea towels and washing-up cloths are provided.
- The living room has an Aga type solid fuel range (peat turf is supplied free)
There is a colour TV and dining and sitting area.
- There is oil fired central heating which can be supplemented with solid fuel if desired.
The water can be heated by the oil or electricity, or a combination of both.
- For Children, the cottage contains a cot and high chair and there is a swing on the chestnut tree.
- There is a patio and barbeque area at the rear of the cottage in the orchard.
- For the fisherman there is a lock up tackle shed with fridge-freezer for bait and equipment storage.
The rail over the solid fuel cooker is ideal for drying wet fishing gear also there is some drying facilities in the tackle shed
Boat hire locally also bait and tackle.
- You can have your fire lighted before you return from your days outing on request.
- A kennel is provided for pets.
Locality (close to: Banagher)
The variety of pubs in Banagher, allows to you can enjoy a quiet drink or follow the sound of singing and traditional music which can be heard on the street to a lively pub session. On a warm night listen to the distinctive sound of the corncrake on Banagher Bridge or go on a Corncrake Evening organized by Bird watch Ireland during the summer.
Walking:
There are several walking routes in the area including the Offaly Way on the banks of the Grand Canal, The 66km Slieve Bloom Way passes deep glens and beautiful waterfalls. The Clara Bog, the Lusmagh bog Walk, Lough Boora Parklands and Portumna Forest Park allow you to walk on a flat landscape of unbelievable natural beauty and rare animal and plant species. All these walks promises the tranquillity of an unspoiled landscape.
Fishing:
Flowing through Lusmagh and Banagher the River Shannon is the major waterway in Ireland. The Little Brosna joins the Shannon at Lusmagh and the Grand Canal joins the Shannon just up stream at Shannon Harbour as also does the Brosna River. All these water ways provide unbeatable angling. There are great stocks of fish including salmon, trout, bream, tench and perch in abundance. Pike fishing is particularly rewarding. The area boasts excellent fishing access and facilities, bait shops and outboard boat hire.
Golf:
There are at least five excellent golf courses within easy reach of Banagher.
The closest, the 18 hole Birr Golf Course is only 8 miles away.
Other courses include: Roscrea Golf Course, Tullamore Golf Club, Esker Hills Golf Course, Glasson Golf and Country Club.
There is a fine pitch and putt course in Banagher itself.
Bog Rail Tour:
Clonmacnoise and West Offaly Railway gives you the opportunity to enjoy a guided 5.5 circular train-ride through a raised bog- the Backwater Bog. Don't miss it!
Birr Castle Demesne:
Features Irelands Historic Science Centre. In the Grounds is the Great Telescope built by the Earl of Rosse in the 1840's and the most wonderful gardens you will want to visit.
Cruises on the River Shannon:
The Viking I takes you back 1200 years to when Viking War bands roamed and pillaged in these waters.The Clonmacnoise Cruise Stops over at the Nonastic Site for one Hour. Scheduled cruises daily from The Strand, Athlone
Equestrian Activities:
There are a number of Riding Centres in the area including Kinnitty Castle Equestrian Centre and Birr Equestrian Centre.
You can trek on bog lands and forest trails with wonderful views of the Slieve Bloom Mountain, Programs tailored to individuals needs.
Tullamore Dew Heritage Centre:
Tour the site of the original Tullamore Dew Distillery. It will take you through life in a small Irish town from the early 1800s onwards as well as showing how whiskey is made - finish with a complimentary glass of Tullamore Dew or Irish Mist Irish whiskey liqueur.

Tariff Information
Tariff Range: from 280 to 400 EUR per week
see opposite for weekly rates
Midweek and Weekends €195 - €250
Christmas Week or New Year's Week: €400 per week.
A deposit of €100 would be appreciated when booking and the balance at some point during your stay at the Chestnut Cottage.
