Locality (close to: Portumna)
Portumna is an ideallic town situated on the shores or the river Shannon where it flows into Lough Derg, the river’s largest lake.
The name Portumna comes from the Irish Port Omna which means Port of the Oak. Portumna has many unique and interesting tourist attractions which include:
- The town is famous for its Castle which was built by Richard De Burgo in the yeat 1226. The castle was badly damaged by fire in 1826 but is now undergoing refurbishment and the complete ground floor is open to the public.
The surrounding 17th century walled garden has also been restored to its former glory
- Portumna is currently served with a five-span road bridge over the river. This was designed by C. E. Stanier of London, and completed in 1911 and it is the largest early-twentieth century swivel bridge in Europe
- Portumna forest park was acquired in 1948 and cover almost 1500 acres. The forest is mainly coniferous but also contains many other species of trees and also has many areas of open space scrub and marsh. This diversity supports many different form of wildlife including fallow deer otter and pine martin.
- Portumna Workhouse open in 1852 and was one of 33 opened after the Famine.
- Portumna Priory was a Cistercian chapel attached to the monastery of Dunbrody, Co Wexford.
- Take a spin to Pallas Karting. Here you can be in the driving seat, jostling for pole position in one of the fastest and most exhilarating sports in Ireland today on Europe's largest Karting Centre.
- Golf
The Laurel Lodge is conveniently located within easy reach of many excellent golf clubs. For your convenience we can arrange your golf outing and provide transport to and from the golf club.
Portumna is an 18 hole golf club situated close to the Laurel Lodge and set centrally in the Portumna fores park, making it a challengine and unique course.
We are also surrounded by some of the finest Golf Courses in Ireland, e.g. Nenagh, Birr, Ballinasloe, Lahinch and Galway Bay
- Fishing
For angling enthusiasts, Portumna offers good fishing waters which have a good track record. There are several prime angling hotspots, a number of which are official match stretches located on the river Shannon itself and the Northern Shores of Lough Derg. On the river there are two stretches up and downstream of Portumna, known locally as the lower 'town stretches' or Rogers Island and upper ESB stretch called Fairyhill. The most commonly caught species include Pike Perch Roach and Bream.
Portumna and district is practically a new area of the lower Shannon to the coarse Angler, offering over twenty miles of unfished water from Shannon Grove on the Galway side and the Blackwater above Victoria Lock on the Tipperary side, down to Lough Derg. It's huge shoals of large Bream, specimen Rudd, Tench and Pike are awaiting the angler visiting the Emerald Isle.
