Locality (close to: Laugharne)
Sir Johns Hill Farm is set in 10 acres and is surrounded by fields and woodland which gently drop down to the sea. It is a very private and peaceful location, well away from main roads, but it also has the advantage of being only half a mile from the village of Laugharne. It is a pleasant stroll down into Laugharne.
The Sir Johns Hill nature walk runs around the lower part of the hill, starting from just outside the Farm and ending up by the Estuary and the Castle. This route was originally used by cockle gatherers coming up from the beach, but is now a well used walk by those who enjoy being out in the country with wonderful sea views and the opportunity to enjoy seeing the wide variety of birds that are to be found around Sir Johns Hill and along the Estuary.
The farm is a great place for people who like to get away from it all and stay in very comfortable cottages with fantastic views. It is an ideal base for those who enjoy walking, riding, painting, photography and birdwatching.
Sir Johns Hill was made famous by the poet Dylan Thomas in his poem 'Over Sir John's Hill' and from the farm it is possible to look down over the Taf Estuary towards the boathouse where he lived for a time and where he wrote some of the finest poetry of the 20th century.
It is one of the finest locations in West Wales and the views are truly outstanding. Not only can you look down over the village and Laugharne Castle, the boathouse and the Taf Estuary, but also across towards Ferryside and Pembrey Sands, Pendine Sands (seven miles of beach), The Gower Peninsula, and Caldey Island, but on a clear day you can also see the coast of North Devon and Lundy Island. The site of the Farm was once used as the look-out for Laugharne Castle, the one-time home of Sir John Perrott, an illegitimate son of Henry VIII, after whom Sir Johns Hill was named.
