Set in the peaceful countryside amid a patchwork of vineyards, sunflower fields and meadows of South West France, La Grande Metairie offers tranquillity with lovely views of the surrounding hills and woodland.
Our local village is Leoville and is just a 2 minute drive away. It has a bakery which provides fresh bread and boasts the best patisserie in the region. In addition there is a post office, butcher’s shop and general store.
We are just 10 minutes drive to the nearest towns of Jonzac and Montendre. Both towns have restaurants, shopping and all the normal town amenities, as well as day and night markets. Jonzac is a charming little town with medieval alleys, a Romanesque church and an impressive 15th century chateau and a covered market. There is a leisure area by the river where there is a children’s play area, horse riding and row boat hire. We are also ideally placed to explore local chateaux, beaches, cities and the world famous wine regions of Bordeaux. Here's just a taster of things to see and do.
Bordeaux – 50 minute drive – Bordeaux is the largest and oldest fine wine producing region in the world, and offers opportunities for wine tasting and chateaux visits. This city is rich in architecture and it is a real joy to walk down some of the smaller side streets and discover buildings adorned with beautifully crafted stonework, wrought iron balconies and fabulous old doorways. There are good quality and reasonably priced restaurants and excellent shopping. Boat trips are available on the Gironde and the Garonne rivers.
Cognac – 40 minute drive - World renowned city on the banks of the Charente River. Cognac is a lovely old town, stroll the medieval streets, enjoy a boat trip, explore the gardens, the quaysides and the cellars or take in a leisurely lunch in one of the many restaurants. The town’s orientation is still very much based around the world famous distilleries and there are plenty of tours to enjoy. The Otard distillery is in the 15th-16th century château and can be enjoyed during the tour, which includes a cognac tasting.
St-Emilion – 1 hour drive – St Emilion to most people is associated with fine red wine, however, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a charming hillside town in the middle of the wine growing district. It is a lovely place to explore with its narrow winding streets, old buildings, and stunning views. Visits are available to nearby vineyards.
The Coast – We are just 40 minutes away from the coast with lovely villages and beautiful beaches.
