Locality (close to: Newton-on-Rawcliffe)
The tastefully furnished and comfortable Cottages at Mel House are situated within extensive level grounds having peaceful sitting-out areas with patio tables and chairs plus picnic benches, herb garden, enclosed water garden with fish pond, barbecue and table tennis.
A converted three-sided low stone barn with double-glazed conservatory area on its fourth, south-facing, side provides an ideal setting for our leisure suite. Here guests can share use of our indoor heated swimming pool with counter-current swim-jet device, spa, and (coin-operated) sauna. Exposed beams in the barn roof void are highlighted by atmospheric lighting whilst full changing, shower, and toilet facilities are available to meet all practical requirements!
Please note that use of the above facilities - available between 9:00am and 9:00pm - will be at your own risk and that children and non-swimmers should be supervised at all times. In particular, it should be noted that the pool depth is a constant 1.2 metres throughout.
In addition, provided they are appropriately insured, we are pleased to be able to offer DIY Livery facilities from May to September for those wishing to bring their horses or ponies on holiday with them.
The Mucky Duck Inn is close by - and our security lighting, which comes on at dusk and goes out at dawn, shows guests the short journey home!
Surrounded by open countryside which overlooks the Vale of Pickering and Newtondale, and adjacent to Cropton Forest, our delightful village stands in the North York Moors National Park. It is ideally situated for access to the many stunning walks, bridleways, and cycle routes to be found in the area.
A 'must' for visitors of all ages, the North York Moors Steam Railway runs from Pickering (4 miles away) past Levisham (station less than 1 mile on foot - steep descent/ascent} and on through Independent Television's 'Heartbeat' country to Grosmont. Why not reserve a table aboard the Pulman for a nostalgic evening dinner?
With its historic Abbey, Captain Cook Museum, Jet Jewellery, sandy beaches and boat trips - Dracula landed here, of course - the fishing port of Whitby is only 20 miles away via a scenic minor road north across the Moors.
To the east, the Victorian seaside resort of Scarborough offers more beaches, family entertainment and shopping. For an evening out here, book a performance at Alan Ayckbourn's excellent Stephen Joseph Theatre - converted from an Art Deco Cinema to provide both a conventional and an 'in-the-round' stage.
For those wishing to have little to do with cooking whilst on holiday there are numerous good value eating places to visit, giving access to an extensive range of menus to suit all tastes from traditional fish and chips to cordon bleu, but please be warned - portions served tend to be extremely generous!
